In the world of fashion, where
countless of designs are made and put to the forefront of popularity, trends
may come and go in the blink of an eye and some never pass, but just how is all
this being protected? How can one be irreplaceable? Well my fellow fashionistas
and apparel fans, this exact answer...
are what Johanna Blakely speaks about in
her video talk, featured on Ted.com.
Johanna speaks about intellectual property and trademarks, and the dirty
little secret of the fashion industry.
Unlike other speakers who tend to
get boring, Johanna kept her speech interesting and funny at times. She had a
perfect tone to her speech, and provided proper presentation slides to relate
to her topic. The reason I chose Johanna Blakely for this fashion blog is because
of her lessons and knowledge of the fashion industry. As I am working on my fashion designs, I
always wondered about how intellectual property worked, but was shocked to find
out that in fashion, there is little if any intellectual property at all. It is
all about trademark. In fashion there is no plagiarism or copyrights. In
fashion you are allowed to copy one another because no one style belongs to
anyone.
I am sure the fashion industry does
not doubt the tremendous value of intellectual capital to the creation and marketing
of their products. However, many small and medium-sized businesses pay little
attention, if any, to protecting such intellectual assets. The primary source
of competitive advantage for all businesses, including those in the fashion
industry, is innovation and original creative expressions. Johanna Blakley
states, “One of the magical side effects of having a culture of copying is the
establishment of trends. People think this is a magical thing. How does it
happen? Because it’s legal [in the fashion industry] for people to copy one
another.”
This has helped me go even deeper
with the clothing line I am designing. It makes me want to be even more
creative and innovative to come up with products that are unique and new.
Before watching Johanna video on ted.com, I had the slightest idea on how
intellectual property worked in fashion industry. So know with a better knowledge
I can have a better approach. When you get a chance check out Johanna Blakley:Lessons from fashions free culture on Ted.com. Click below…
