Mikhail Bortnik is the man behind the bear branded
fashion MISHKA NYC. Born as a Russian/Ukraine native, Mikhail made his way to
the big apple at the age of one. Brooklyn became Mikhail’s new home and has
been living there ever since. Before
starting his fashion brand, Mikhail took a lot of his inspiration from comics,
music like punk rock, metal and Hip-Hop with his love of horror movies and its
pop art associated with it.
This love and obsession turned into doing art and design
work for Marvel Comics, creating advertising for companies and helping publish
children’s book. This exact skill and experience is what Mikhail brings to the
table as the Creative Director for Mishka NYC. The significance behind Mishka is
quite intriguing as the word means Bear in Russian. Created in 2003, what
started as a graphic t-shirt company grew into one of the elite street-wear
brands we see today. The Mishka brand
has used the web more effectively than any other street-wear company in the
industry.
This success is part in due to its blog, the Bloglin,
which gathers up more than 7,000 unique visitors a day. This blog hosts
mixtapes for up-and-coming artists, which showcases their talent and skills. With
this comes an underground and commercial fan base. Nowadays the brand is being
recognized for the pop art toys it makes and its grotesque band of characters
that appear on its fashion designs. Its most recognizable logos contain either
the bear with a king’s crown or a comic art-looking bloodshot eye.
